UPDATE : City firefiighters werew called to this East Corydon Street house at 12:29 p.m. Soon afterward, they called a second alarm to bring out 15 more city firefighters and 30 Bradford Township volunteers. The Rapid Intervention Team was also called in. Firefighters were on the scene for six hours. The house is believed to be a total loss. They have not determined a cause yet; a state police fire marshal will be investigating on Sunday. The house is owned by Eric Jennings. He, his fiance and their four children were not home at the time. Bradford City and Bradford Township firefighters are battling a house fire on Corydon Street. A BT volunteer tells WESB and The Hero that everyone got out safely. The street is closed between South Avenue and Congress Street. We'll have more information later today. WILLIAMSPORT -- Thanks to the Department of Environmental Protection’s successful Hollywood acid mine drainage treatment plant, the Bennett Branch and Toby Creek watershed associations and the Potter County Anglers’ Club will celebrate the waterway’s rebirth on Saturday and stock 1,000 trout above and below the plant near the Clearfield-Elk counties border. “In less than a year, the Hollywood plant has treated 21 separate discharges from four abandoned deep mines, raising the pH from 3.8 to neutral and removing harmful metals like iron, aluminum and manganese,” DEP Deputy Secretary for Water Management Kelly Heffner said. “Bennett Branch is now so healthy that trout stocking will be done for the first time, which is sure to increase tourism in that area and benefit local angler-related businesses.” The 11:30 a.m. trout stocking will be done by the Potter County Anglers’ Club as part of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Cooperative Nursery Program. “This is a milestone in t

City of Bradford Police on Thursday got three calls about disorderly conduct at the same Interstate Parkway address. They were called to disturbances on West Corydon and Rochester streets and a report of harassment on Elm Street. Two McKean County residents are on the Cattaraugus County “10 Most Wanted List.” Jerome Hayes, whose last known address was in Kane, is wanted for felony DWI and assault Dennis Berg, whose last known address was in Eldred, is wanted on family court warrant "Perhaps these individuals will see that they've been added to the top ten list,” said Lt. A Ridgway man is accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old Cattaraugus County girl five years ago. 38-year-old Harold Hunt is charged with predatory sexual assault against a child and endangering the welfare of a child. HARRISBURG – The Marcellus Shale Impact Fee has generated more than $198,000,000 in revenue for 2012, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson). Over the past 8 months, more than $400 million in revenue has been generated by the impact fee. The fee revenue for 2012 was due to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) by April 1st, 2013. Under the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee, Act 13 of 2012, the PUC is responsible for the collection and distribution of impact fees. “I am pleased to see the positive effect that the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee revenue funds are having across our state,” Scarnati said. “This reasonable impact fee on the industry provides the necessary funding to protect Pennsylvania’s natural resources, particularly during a time when we continue needing to find ways to stretch our tax dollars.” Senator Scarnati was a chief architect of the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee legislation, which was enacted last year after considerable discussion among state gov

Four organizations in Elk County are among 19 across the state that will receive the 2013 Environmental Excellence Award. The Bennett Branch Watershed Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and P&N Coal Company were all involved in the Dents Run Watershed Restoration Project. The project restored and revegetated 320 acres of abandoned mine lands, which can now serve as habitat for the state’s wild elk herd in the adjacent Elk State Forest. The project also restored waterways in the area by neutralizing acid mine water, marking the first time in more than a century the streams can support aquatic life. A Bradford man is accused of injuring a disabled person in Cattaraugus County. Sheriff’s deputies say 45-year-old Robert Crosby had physical contact with, and injured, a resident in the New York State Developmental Disability Home in Mansfield, New York. He is charged with endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person, or an incompetent or physically disabled person. He’s in Cattaraugus County Jail on $25,000 bail. The man accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife while she was playing the organ in church back in December has waived his preliminary hearing. 53-year-old Gregory Eldred is charged with murder for fatally shooting 53-year-old Darlene Sitler at the First United Presbyterian Church in Coudersport. He remains in Potter County Jail without bail. The hearing had been postponed twice so a mental health evaluation could be done on Eldred. The case now goes to the Court of Common Pleas. A Leon, New York, teenager is charged with burglary for an alleged incident Wednesday morning in Leon. 18-year-old Mahlon Gingrich allegedly broke into the Adams Lumber Mill at 8:30 a.m. and stole – five cans of pop. He is also charged with petit larceny. He was sent to Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Town of Leon Court. A Port Allegany man is facing charges for allegedly committing a sex act while driving on Interstate 80 in Mercer County. Police say 60-year-old Robert Haskins was in his vehicle at 8:18 a.m. on March 29 in the left passing lane next to a truck tractor, when he exposed his genitals while conducting a sex act on himself in full view of the truck driver. The truck driver called state police, who stopped Haskins and charged him with indecent exposure, open lewdness and careless driving. According to the affidavit of probable cause, Haskins said "it was stupid and he wasn't sure why he was doing it." He added, "just passing time, I guess." Bradford Area High School Senior, Michael McLanahan, has been selected as the United Way of the Bradford Area’s 2013 Excellence in Representation honoree. McLanahan, who served on the campaign Speaker’s Bureau for the 2012 solicitation efforts, represented CARE for Children. He was nominated by fellow agency representatives, and was approved by the United Way’s Board of Directors. “Michael was an integral part of the Speaker’s Bureau, having volunteered to speak on eight occasions to nearly 400 individuals,” said Mandi Wilton Davis, executive director. “He profoundly described his own experiences and successes, having been a recipient of CARE for Children’s services for many years. “He challenged those to whom he spoke to look deep within their hearts – and eventually their wallets – to consider how fortunate we all are to be accepted for who we are and what we accomplish,” Davis continued. “For me, personally, it was such an honor to work alongside Michael – and I will continue

It will be a sister act for the United Way of the Bradford Area’s Red Feather volunteer recognition event, as Jane Luzzi and Mary Reiley will be honored at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 1st. “I am so proud to announce this recognition for two women whose services to this organization date back several years,” said Executive Director Mandi Wilton Davis. “Jane and Mary – although at different times – both paved the way for outstanding volunteerism and leadership for our local United Way, and they continue today to be strong supporters of our efforts.” The Red Feather award was implemented to honor outstanding individuals and/or businesses who have made an impact on the united Way, and the local community as a whole, through their day-to-day selfless attitude and commitment to exemplify the organization’s mission of enhancing the quality of life in the greater Bradford area. A Chautauqua County teacher’s aide is accused of spraying a 5-year-old boy with cleaning solution that got into his eyes. The boy was taken to the nurse’s office, where his eyes were flushed with water. He wasn’t hurt. The aide, Terry Kemp of Jamestown, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Police say Kemp sprayed the boy while cleaning tables in the lunchroom at Southwestern Elementary School on March 20. She told police she meant no harm to the child and was being playful. A Duke Center man is in jail after allegedly assaulting and critically injuring a girl Monday. Police did not say how old the girl is, but say 28-year-old Kevin Collins slapped her, choked her and slammed her body to the floor, knocking her unconscious. The alleged incident happened on Oil Valley Road in Otto Township. The girl was first taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center, but later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, where she is in critical condition. Collins is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment. His bail is $50,000. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

City of Bradford Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault on West Washington Street. Also over the weekend, police were called to disturbances on Congress and State streets and an animal complaint on North Street. They also stopped a possible drunk driver on Davis Street, got reports about harassment on Pleasant, Main and Roberts streets, disorderly conduct on West Washington Street and suspicious activity on Jerome Avenue. Cloey Anne Smith, 12, of Arcade, NY, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013 after a five year battle with leukemia in Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. Born August 13, 2000 in Springville, NY, she was a daughter of Casey Smith and Julia Root, who survive her. She was a 7th grader at Pioneer Middle School in Arcade. Cloey loved shopping, her dog Rufus and was very active with Carly’s Club at Roswell Park Cancer Center In addition to her mother, Julia Root of Arcade, and her father, Casey (Cyndi) Smith of Bradford, she is survived by a brother, Darel Tingue of Arcade, NY; three step brothers, Nicolas, Nathan and Evan Franco, all of Bradford; maternal grandparents, Jacqueline Root of Franklinville, NY and paternal grandparents, Edward and Sandee Franklin of Freedom, NY and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
