Thompson-Sponsored STEM Jobs Act Passes

Image
Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House today passed H.R. 6429, the STEM Jobs Act, a bill to prioritize the legal immigration status for foreign graduates of U.S. universities with advanced science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degrees. U.S. Representative Thompson is a cosponsor of the bipartisan legislation, which passed by a vote of 245-135. “It’s senseless to have someone come to the U.S. for an advanced education, then deny them the opportunity to join American businesses and help fill key high-skill job shortages, which is critical to expanding employment opportunities for more American workers,” stated Rep. Thompson. “We should welcome talented young minds to help fuel new innovations, create new businesses and work opportunities, rather than equip foreign competitors with graduates trained in our world class universities. Passage of H.R. 6429 will create additional pathways for STEM graduates to fulfill our workforce needs and serve as a catalyst for job expan

Corbett Signs Bill to Modernize
Pennsylvania's Library Code

Image
EXTON – Governor Tom Corbett today signed legislation introduced by Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) to modernize Pennsylvania's 51-year-old Library Code, the law which governs how public libraries operate in the state. The ceremonial bill signing took place at the Chester County Library and District Center with dozens of librarians and library supporters looking on. "I introduced this legislation to modernize Pennsylvania's Library Code because I believe in public libraries," Senator Pileggi said. "I believe the mission of public libraries is more critical than ever." Senate Bill 1225 dramatically updates the Library Code, freeing libraries from the burden of unnecessary and outdated requirements. The 1961 law, for example, requires every district library center to have a minimum of 300 16-millimeter films in its collection. "When it was enacted in 1961, Pennsylvania's original Library Code was a national model," Senator P

Judge Fines Ceglia -- Again

Image
Paul Ceglia has been ordered to pay about $90,000 in attorney fees to Facebook, on top of the more than $75,000 he had previously been ordered to pay in his ongoing civil lawsuit against the multi-billion company and its founder Mark Zuckerberg. A federal judge ordered the new payment as a result of Ceglia’s last-minute cancellation of depositions Facebook had already paid its lawyers to do. He also has to pay for travel and lodging for experts that were scheduled to be deposed. The Wellsville man claims he and Zuckerberg entered into a contract in 2003 that entitles him to a 50 percent share of the company. But in October, he was charged with mail and wire fraud for allegedly doctoring documents that supported his claim. Earlier this week one of his lawyers, Dean Boland, argued in federal court his motion to be taken off the civil case. Ceglia opposed the motion, saying Facebook is pressuring Boland to withdraw. The judge hasn’t decided on the motion yet. About half a dozen lawyers

Wagner Wants Tattoo Parlor Regulation

I obviously missed this story during the two weeks I was back and forth from Erie, but I felt it was important to post it here in case anyone else missed it, too. ~~ Anne HARRISBURG – Auditor General Jack Wagner has called on the General Assembly and the state the Department of Health to step up the state’s role in regulating the tattoo parlor industry in Pennsylvania because of potential health risks to the general public, including Hepatitis C. Wagner said that requiring Pennsylvania’s more than 750 known tattoo parlors and artists to obtain a state license would protect public health while helping state officials monitor one of the fastest-growing segments of the local economy. "We license cosmetologists, hair salons and nail salons; it’s time we join the growing number of states that also regulate tattoo parlors,” Wagner said. “If we do not, the potential health risk to Pennsylvanians increases with every needle puncture.” Read the news release here . New Procedures for New York Gun Shows

The New York attorney general’s office has reached an agreement with a Chautauqua County gun show operator to implement new procedures at their shows. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced today that Niagara Frontier Collectors, along with NEACA in Saratoga County, agreed to establish procedures that go beyond the requirements of the state’s Gun Show Law, including a process that ensures all guns brought into the shows by private sellers are tagged so, when leaving, the operator can determine if guns were sold and that a proper background check was performed. The agreements follow an undercover investigation by the AG’s office. During a news conference in Buffalo this morning, Schneiderman said, "Our investigation demonstrated how the 'off the books' sale of guns presents a great risk to public safety. This agreement builds upon our work by holding gun show operators responsible for the purchases made at their events.” "Gun violence is an epidemic,” Schneide
