UPDATE: The man who died is Harry Loomis of Cherry Creek. An 83-year-old Chautauqua County resident is dead after being thrown from a vehicle during a crash Friday night on Route 5. The victim’s name has not been released yet. Sheriff’s deputies say 31-year-old Jason Gage of Buffalo was driving a tractor-trailer in the Town of Pomfret when the victim pulled out in front of him. Gage’s rig hit the victim’s vehicle, which then spun out and landed in a ditch. The victim was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital, where the person later died. Little Valley, NY - A Cattaraugus County Jury today of six women and six men found Michael J. Ward of South Barry Street, Olean, NY, not guilty of one count of felony assault 2nd and guilty of one count of a violation for unlawfully possessing marijuana. It was alleged that Mr. Ward, age 23, had assaulted his former girlfriend in the residence they shared at 1309 Washington Street in Olean on June 15th of last year. Mr. Ward was arrested based upon a complaint from the former girlfriend, Jenny E. Stephens, 28, now of Batavia, which was made to Olean City Police on August 5, 2011. Mr. Ward was found to have a small amount of marijuana in his pants pocket when he was arrested later that day. The jury deliberated for approximately one hour before announcing their verdict. The four day trial was presided over by Cattaraugus County Judge Larry M. Himelein. It was Judge Himelein’s first trial since returning to work after an extended medical leave. More a dozen accidents were reported across the Twin Tiers this afternoon. At just after 3 o’clock a pickup truck traveling on Route 219 went off the road just north of Tack’s Inn and rolled over an embankment. The driver was able to get himself out of the vehicle. A couple of minutes later Bradford City Police were called to an accident at the intersection of Mill and East Main streets. At around 2:40 emergency responders were called to a crash just west of the cemetery curve on Route 6. One person was hurt, but a helicopter could not respond because of the weather. Several accidents were reported on I-86, including one where a driver hit a couple of road signs. Other motorists got stuck on the side of the road. On Humphrey Road a car crashed into a utility pole and flipped over. At just after 4 o’clock a vehicle crashed into a bus near Hinsdale. No injuries were reported. Pennsylvania’s jobless rate dropped to 7.6 percent in December, from 7.9 percent in November. The state’s unemployment rate is now nine-tenths of a percentage point lower than the national rate of 8.5 percent. In its report released today, the Department of Labor and Industry says the falling unemployment means two things: some people found work; others stopped looking. 11,000 more people were working in December than in November. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it plans to perform water sampling at approximately 60 homes in the Carter Road/Meshoppen Creek Road area of Dimock, Pa. to further assess whether any residents are being exposed to hazardous substances that cause health concerns. EPA’s decision to conduct sampling is based on EPA’s review of data provided by residents, Cabot Oil and Gas, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. “EPA is working diligently to understand the situation in Dimock and address residents’ concerns,” said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “We believe that the information provided to us by the residents deserves further review, and conducting our own sampling will help us fill information gaps. Our actions will be based on the science and the law and we will work to help get a more complete picture of water quality for these homes in Dimock.” The sampling will begin in a matter of days and the agency estimates that it wi

The blood shortage that developed in the region worsened with continued heavier than normal usage and lighter than anticipated donor turnout the two contributing factors. Much of the nation is experiencing the same problem so the blood bank won't be able to borrow blood in the event the situation becomes critical. Local donors are needed to end this shortage. In the past the Community Blood Bank has been able to buy blood from other blood banks to help end shortages. The Community Blood Bank has also sold blood to other blood banks in the same predicament. Foster has committed $2 million to St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business Campaign, the university announced today. Daria Foster is managing partner of Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC. The contribution will provide $1 million toward the construction of a new building to house the School of Business and $1 million in endowment to support academic programs. The gift honors her late husband of more than 30 years, William C. Foster. A member of St. Bonaventure’s class of 1962 and Fordham Law School (’65), Mr. Foster practiced law for 35 years, retiring in 2000 as senior associate counsel for Champion International. He served on St. Bonaventure’s Board of Trustees from 2008 to his passing in 2010. A Winter Weather Advisory is effect until midnight for McKean, Warren, Elk and Potter counties, and until 5 a.m. Friday in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. The National Weather Service in State College says we could see 2 to 4 inches of snow before midnight, and wind gusts could be as high as 30 miles an hour. The National Weather Service in Buffalo says some areas in Western New York could see up to 9 inches of snow by tomorrow morning. A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties, and motorists should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility. UPDATE: The man who died is Barry Tyler An Olean man is dead following a bus accident Wednesday afternoon on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Franklinville. State Police say the 50-year-old bus driver, whose name has not been released yet, had seven disabled adults on the bus when it went off the road and hit a tree. The driver was taken to Olean General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say the man may have suffered a medical problem before the crash. A Brocton man was found guilty of trying to kidnap a 13-year-old girl as she was riding her bike to school last May in Fredonia. 22-year-old Corey Kimmy was convicted after a four-day trial. He faces a mandatory prison term of up to 15 years when he is sentenced next month. Kimmy grabbed the girl at about 7:25 a.m. on May 19, but she was able to get free and run to a nearby home, where the residents called police. Kimmy was arrested about about eight hours later. Father Sam Slocum was found guilty of three charges and not guilty of two following his trial in McKean County Court. A jury found him guilty of a felony count of concealing the whereabouts of a child, and misdemeanor and summary counts of corruption of minors, according to McKean County District Attorney Ray Learn. Slocum was found not guilty of a felony count of interference of custody of children and a misdemeanor count of loitering and prowling at nighttime, according to Learn. A Shinglehouse man suffered moderate injuries in an accident at about 12:45 Tuesday morning on Plank Road in Sharon Township. State Police say a pickup truck driven by 34-year-old Travis Siebert went off the road while rounding a curve then hit a tree. Two people were hurt in an accident at just before noon today on Route 6 in Roulette Township. State Police say a car driven by 54-year-old Elma Lannager of Roulette went off the road and hit an embankment. It then spun around and the back of the car ended up in a ditch. A Roulette man is accused of threatening another man with a knife early this morning. Police say at around 1 a.m. 37-year-old Shawn Rader and 20-year-old Benjamin Price were arguing at Rader’s house. Rader eventually grabbed a large knife and threatened Price with it multiple times and also allegedly hit Price in the face. Rader will be charged with terroristic threats. HARRISBURG – High school seniors can now apply for a Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship to help cover the costs of higher education, Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) announced today. Each year, two students preparing for post-secondary education are awarded four-year scholarships. The program is privately funded by individual and corporate donors. No tax or other public funds are used. The program is open to graduating high school seniors who are Pennsylvania residents with plans to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school as a full-time student. Students must have attained a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average in high school in order to be eligible for the scholarship. A student’s commitment to community, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and financial need are also taken into consideration. Harrisburg – A bill to improve emergency management and response at Marcellus Shale wellsites received the approval of the Senate today. Sen. Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Steinhauser, 73, of 618 W. Washington St. Bradford. passed away Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 at The Pavilion at BRMC surrounded by her loving family. Born February 1, 1938, in Ellicottville, NY she was a daughter of Sylvester and Regina (Markowitz) Guy. On March 26, 1960, in Ellicottville, NY, she married Carl L. Steinhauser Jr. who died on September 19, 2011. Mrs. Steinhauser was a 1956 graduate of Ellicottville High School. She moved from Ellicottville to Bradford to work at First Federal Saving and Loan Company, then she worked as an accountant at S.K & Tate Furs and later as a desk clerk at the DeSoto Holiday House. She enjoyed going to auctions and looking for antiques and she collected Hummel Figurines. She formerly attended Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has redesigned its elementary education major to meet new requirements from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The new major, “Early Education, Pre-K-4,” replaces the elementary education major, although students will be able to graduate with an elementary education major through the spring 2013. Dr. Donna Dombek, associate professor of education and coordinator of elementary education, said that she has been working for several years to develop the new major, which was approved by the state’s Department of Education in 2010 and by the University of Pittsburgh in the fall. The state will change its requirements for certification at the end of summer 2013, Dombek explained, requiring teachers to have a bachelor’s degree in prekindergarten through grade 4 or grade 4 through 8. The jury in the trial of Father Sam Slocum has started its deliberations. Slocum is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old boy, and is charged with corruption of minors, interfering with custody of a child and concealing the whereabouts of a child. The 60-year-old priest was suspended from his duties at St. Francis and Our Mother of Perpetual Help churches after the charges were filed in April. The local blood supply dropped suddenly overnight causing a blood shortage. In an unusual scenario, more blood was used by local hospitals Tuesday than was transfused all of last weekend. The blood supply had not gotten back to 100% after the holidays so it had lower to fall to hit shortage levels. Extra donors are now needed to meet local needs and to end this shortage. A Napoli teenager is accused of biting his father during a domestic dispute over the weekend. Sheriff’s deputies say the 18-year-old bit his father’s hand. He was charged with assault. Two commercial box trucks collided head-on Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Route 155 and Gardeau Road in Norwich Township. Police say one truck was north on 155 and starting to pass a school bus that was stopped while waiting to make a left turn, when it hit the other truck that was traveling south. The driver of the second truck, Jaqueline Daughtery of Bradford, and a passenger in the first truck, who is from Brooklyn, New York, were taken to Charles Cole Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injures. Tickets are now on sale for Bradford Little Theatre’s production of “Twelve Angry Men” to be performed at the First Presbyterian Church Feb. 3-5. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced this afternoon it will continue to suspend any plan to divide the 814 area code, or overlay another area code on it, at least until April. PUC commissioners made their decision after learning the area code is not expected to run out of available numbers until early 2016. Earlier predictions called for the area code to exhaust its supply of numbers by 2013. Commissioners voted in 2010 to split the 814 area-code region to prevent it from running out of available numbers. The plan was supposed to take effect in February of this year, with some people switching to the 582 area code. Petitions against the split, and then new predictions for the exhaustion date convinced the PUC to hold off on the changes. Bonnie Tancar, 75, of 1095 Summit Rd, Rew, passed away Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 at her residence. Born April 3, 1936, in Brockway, she was a daughter of the late Albert L. and Margaret (McKay) Benson. On April 26, 1959 in Bradford she married Donald A. "Joe" Howard who died August 18, 1975, then on February 14, 1981, she married Michael Tancar who died November 8, 2005. Mrs. Tancar had worked at Loblaws Grocery Store, as a Toy Lady Demonstrator and later as a school bus driver for the Bradford Area School District for more than 30 years. She grew up on Patterson Lane and attended Bradford schools. She was mostly known to family and friends for her baking, but most of all she loved her family unconditionally, and they feel fortunate to have had such a mother. Surviving are two daughters, Jo (Philip) Marinelli of Newbury Park, CA; and Dawne Howard of Garner, NC; two sons Albert Howard of Bradford and Michael (Linda) Howard of Smethport; one step daughter, Theresa (Richard) P

Scientists studying white nose syndrome in bats estimate the ailment has killed at least 5.7 million bats in the U.S. and Canada. White nose is caused by a fungus that prompts bats to wake from their winter hibernation and die after they fly into the cold air in a search for insects. White-nose syndrome was first identified in upstate New York in 2006, and since then has been found along the Eastern seaboard from New Hampshire to North Carolina, as well as in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It also has been detected in four Canadian provinces. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the new estimate shows the severity of the threat to bats. Wilbert J. ‘Rupe’ Wolfe, 90, of 122 Barbour Street, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 17, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at The Pavilion at BRMC. Born February 16, 1921, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Lea Baun and Genevieve Rose (Kennedy) Wolfe. On August 3, 1946, he married Helen A. (Connelly) Wolfe who survives. Mr. Wolfe was a 1942 graduate of Bradford High School. On August 21, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre simultaneously with six of his brothers, and was honorably discharged February 9, 1946. He worked at Trico Industries as a machinist for 41 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Bernard Church, The Italian American Progressive Club, The American Legion and the Eagle’s Club. Justin Walker sold crack cocaine in Olean on November 17, 2010, according to the Cattaraugus County District Attorney's office. Walker is scheduled for sentencing on April 23. A public book club meeting will start the series of activities for this year’s One Book Bradford season. The public book club, which is open to anyone interested, will take place at 10:30 Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Bradford Area Public Library. Judy Harris will lead the discussion of “Clara and Mr. Tiffany” by Susan Vreeland. The book invites readers to take a look inside the world where Tiffany leaded-glass lamps were created. Many of the masterpieces were that of glass studio manager Clara Driscoll, not Louis Comfort Tiffany. Anne Bouquin will also speak briefly of when Susan B. Anthony visited Bradford in 1892. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Bradford Area Public Library. Admission is free. When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gives his budget address this afternoon he will call for millions of dollars in state funding to keep the Buffalo Bills in Western New York. Cuomo's listing of "critical economic development investments" includes keeping the team in the region. The team would be eligible for part of an $84 million fund to be shared by several economic development interests. A section of Interstate 80 near Clearfield was closed for several hours this morning after two tractor-trailers collided. PennDOT says the crash happened at about 3 a.m. a few miles past the Penfield to Clearfield interchange, and both eastbound lanes were closed for nine miles. One of the drivers suffered minor injuries. One lane was reopened at around noon. Crews are still cleaning up debris in the other lane, but expect it to be reopened later this afternoon. William H. Ayers, 81, of 28 Patterson Lane, Bradford, passed away Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie. Born September 24, 1930, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Herbert and Florence (Wormer) Ayers. On November 13, 1954 in the First Church of the Nazarene he married Beverly (Gardner) Ayers who survives. Mr. Ayers attended Bradford High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy on October 28,1947, served during the Korean War, and was honorably discharge October 13, 1952. Mr. Ayers had been employed at Bell Aircraft, and then as a league leader in the maintenance department at Georgia Pacific from where he retired. He was a past member of the Sportsman Club, American Legion, VFW and the former Bradford Moose Lodge. He loved playing cards with his family. Taking walks with his dog and being outside to enjoy the beauty of the area. One of his favorite pastimes was having coffee with his buddies and panning for gold. Mr. Ayers won the Job

A North Harmony man is facing a charge of forcible touching following an alleged incident at around 1 o’clock Friday morning in Panama, New York. 50-year-old Paul Carlson was charged on Sunday after an investigation by the sheriff’s office. The Pennsylvania House and Senate return to Harrisburg today for voting sessions. The Senate is scheduled to vote on a bill that would require GPS coordinates to be posted at the entrance to all gas-drilling sites. They also are scheduled to begin work on a bill authorizing an additional 60 days of federally funded benefits for unemployed workers. Those benefits were set to expire on February. 4, but congressional legislation approved in late December allows states to extend assistance checks. The House will be considering Senator Joe Scarnati’s bill that would require anyone applying for public benefits to show proof of citizenship. In Pennsylvania, the advisory is from 7 o’clock tonight until 6 o’clock tomorrow morning and wind gusts could be up to 50 miles an hour. In New York, the warning is from 5 o’clock this afternoon until 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. The National Weather Service says wind gusts could be up to 60 miles an hour. Winds this strong can cause property damage. Motorists in high profile vehicles should use caution until the wind subsides. There’s also a Lake Effect Snow watch in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties through tomorrow afternoon, and more than a foot of snow could fall in some areas. Olean High School students are getting an extra day off from school this week. They won’t have to go tomorrow because of problems with the school’s heating system. A number of leaks were detected in the system and several issues will have to be addressed immediately. Teachers and staff should report to work as normal tomorrow, though. Tied for 31st in the Nation For the second week in a row and fourth time this season, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team is Receiving Votes in the Associated Press Poll released Monday afternoon. The Bonnies are off to a program-best 16-2 start, including a perfect 3-0 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference action following a 64-52 victory over Saint Louis Saturday afternoon. This is the first time the Bonnies have Received Votes four times in a single year, and the votes are enough to rank them in a tie for 31st in the nation. Only three schools in the entire country – No. 1 Baylor (17-0), No. 2 Notre Dame (17-1) and No. 10 Ohio State (17-1) – have more wins than St. Bonaventure. Bonaventure is 6-2 against teams which rank in the top-100 of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), the best record of all A-10 schools; Richmond, Saint Joseph's and Temple all have four wins against top-100 teams. Ruth L. Feura, 81, of 88 Fairview Heights, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 16th, 2012 at The Pavilion at BRMC. Born August 26, 1930, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late James M. and Gertrude (Orton) Burns. On October 15, 1955 at St Bernard Church in Bradford, she married Raymond F. Feura who survives. Mrs. Feura was a 1949 graduate of Bradford High School. She received her Registered Nurses Degree from Millard Filmore School of Nursing in 1952 and also attended the University of Buffalo. In 1989 she graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, Bradford Campus with a degree in Gerontology. Mrs. Feura had worked at the Bradford Hospital, Warren Dental Arts and then back to the Bradford Hospital and helped develop the Stress Lab. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church . In addition to her husband of 56 years she is survived by one daughter, Robyn (Ted) Hardy of Bradford; three sons Rand (Carol) Feura of Santee CA; Richard (Cindy) Feura of Manassa

James Tsepelis, Sr., 78, of 400 Derrick Rd, Bradford, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born August 28, 1933, in Olean, NY, he was a son of the late Socrates and Mary (Hanson) Tsepelis. On October 31, 1953, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in East Bradford, he married Marlyn (Kuhns) Tsepelis who survives. Mr. Tsepelis attended Bradford Area Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on January 4, 1954, served with the Signal Corp during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on January 3, 1956. He had been employed at Zippo Manufacturing for 34 years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, skeet shooting, snowmobiling and shooting pool. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a former member of the Zippo Golf League. After retirement he and his wife loved to travel, and spend time with their children and extended family. Mr. Tsepelis leaves behind his wife of 58 years, three daughters, Cathy McCle
