Local Blood Shortage Worsens;

Senate Approves Wellsite Safety Bill

Harrisburg – A bill to improve emergency management and response at Marcellus Shale wellsites received the approval of the Senate today. Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20) offered the following remarks in support of the measure, which she sponsored: There are many different views and disagreements over policy about the gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale. But there is at least one thing on which there is a broad consensus – the necessity of being prepared to react and respond when something goes wrong. Whether it involves where wells are being drilled or facilities are operating. This bill provides for the emergency preparedness required to protect the health and safety of our communities, and safeguard the environment against trouble turning into catastrophe. UPB Redesigns Elementary Education

The new major, “Early Education, Pre-K-4,” replaces the elementary education major, although students will be able to graduate with an elementary education major through the spring 2013. Dr. Donna Dombek, associate professor of education and coordinator of elementary education, said that she has been working for several years to develop the new major, which was approved by the state’s Department of Education in 2010 and by the University of Pittsburgh in the fall. The state will change its requirements for certification at the end of summer 2013, Dombek explained, requiring teachers to have a bachelor’s degree in prekindergarten through grade 4 or grade 4 through 8. Currently elementary school teachers are certified to teach prekindergarten through sixth grade. Pitt-Bradford might offer a major to study education for grades 4 through 8 i

Toomey Comments on Pipeline Rejection

Image
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) denounced President Obama’s rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline permit today. “President Obama has been trying to campaign against a do-nothing Congress, but he is the one who is impeding job creation and economic growth in this country,” Sen. Toomey said. “The Keystone pipeline has the potential to create tens of thousands of American jobs, increase our access to oil from our friend in Canada, and diminish our dependence on less secure sources of energy. The pipeline has broad bipartisan support in Congress, and it does not require any taxpayer dollars to build it. I’m extremely disappointed that President Obama has chosen to sacrifice American jobs and our energy security to appease environmental special interests.” The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Area Code Change Delayed Again

Image
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced this afternoon it will continue to suspend any plan to divide the 814 area code, or overlay another area code on it, at least until April. PUC commissioners made their decision after learning the area code is not expected to run out of available numbers until early 2016. Earlier predictions called for the area code to exhaust its supply of numbers by 2013. Commissioners voted in 2010 to split the 814 area-code region to prevent it from running out of available numbers. The plan was supposed to take effect in February of this year, with some people switching to the 582 area code. Petitions against the split, and then new predictions for the exhaustion date convinced the PUC to hold off on the changes. The PUC is scheduled to receive an update in April on when numbers in the 814 area code could run out. http://www.puc.state.pa.us/general/press_releases/Press_Releases.aspx?ShowPR=2914 \ The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Feds: White-Nose Sydrome Killed
Nearly 6 Million Bats in US, Canada

Scientists studying white nose syndrome in bats estimate the ailment has killed at least 5.7 million bats in the U.S. and Canada. White nose is caused by a fungus that prompts bats to wake from their winter hibernation and die after they fly into the cold air in a search for insects. White-nose syndrome was first identified in upstate New York in 2006, and since then has been found along the Eastern seaboard from New Hampshire to North Carolina, as well as in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It also has been detected in four Canadian provinces. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the new estimate shows the severity of the threat to bats.
